@sweetlexi_crazykip gets her second stripe. Way to go Kim. A lot of suffering goes into getting little pieces of tape on your belt but the ones that go on your white belt are the hardest to get. You’re effectively getting rewarded for getting your ass kicked. Eventually you get stripes for kicking people asses. But the first three represent a lot of beatings. No way around it. This is how we learn jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu is a game of problem solving where we learn to trial and error how to solve complex physical interactions centered submitting your training partner. There is going to be a lot of error in this. You’re always learning but you learn more when you lose. Put another way the more beatings you take the quicker you’ll be a black belt. Jiu jitsu logic. We've been doing a lot of work from open guard this summer and and everyone is starting to get pretty handy with their feet. So just to keep things interesting I thought we would start playing with leg locks. Hey friends, a long note (I don't have time to write a short one) on the progress of the club and an update. I'll start with the update first.
It is with mixed emotions that I (@kaflooey ) am stepping away from Fernie BJJ due to personal reasons and commitments. I love the club and the people that make it and wish them continued success. @tretzik , the steadfast club partner that helped get us off the ground will be taking over fully with the help of other members of the club.
We've grown from a few people rolling on some borrowed mats (Thanks Fred Gietz ) in my spare room, to the @fernieoldschoolboxingclub (Thanks Mike), to the dojo in Max Turyk Community Centre, where we're thriving. We currently have 2 brown belts (Tim and Timo), a purple belt, a couple of blue belts, multiple white belts and lots of international visitors of all levels. Special thanks to @affinitybjj in Calgary who has been nothing but supportive in my BJJ Journey.

So, good luck @tretzik , keep doing what you're doing.
And to the folks in Fernie and visiting from out of town, please keep coming, it's an amazing club and community!

Huge congratulations to @valechuste on becoming Fernie BJJ's first blue belt. He doesn't care about belts but he looks pretty stoked here and he should. Peter put in nearly two years of blood sweat and I'm sure a few tears. Not only has Peter worked his ass off to get better at jiu jitsu but he has put in the time to help others get better as well. Jiu jitsu is about community. It takes a village. Everyone contributes in some way to the development of their training partners. Every skill level is valuable and imperative in your jiu jitsu journey. We celebrate these moments because we all had a part in it. Way to go Peter! Be like Peter. Get in and train. One of the most fundamental concepts in jiu jitsu

One of the most fundamental concepts in jiu jitsu is head control. This translates into: Never let someone have control of your head. When we can control our training partners head it is easy to influence their body position and which improves our ability to control their movement and even put them in positions that lead to high percentage submission.

The back is arguably the most dominate position in Jiu jitsu. I gives you immense control over your opponent and is a great platform to launch attacks from. We will be doing a deep dive into this dynamic position with a lot of work on getting to the back when your opponent turtles. Intro classes are every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30. Half-guarding. Lots of good stuff happening here. We spent the last few weeks working on all things half guard. Everyone got a good look at what possible from this versatile position. We learned the pummel, and using it to take the back or sweep. We worked on building a good knee shield and then how to pass it. Timo taught everyone how to rip off my arm with the kimura. We spent a lot of time learning how to use position weight and pressure to control out partners centerline. You know, the fundamentals of jiu jitsu. Tuesday will be our last half guard session. Half guard is one of the most important positions to understand in jiu jitsu. You'll spend a lot of time in half guard so it's best to know what to do when you're there.
